Introduction Back in 1926, an engineer named Hans Stihl created a portable electric saw that could be carried around by hand. The saw featured a small electric motor and blades that were seated into the frame of the machine. It looked more like a desk fan than it did a chainsaw! In 1934, Stihl manufactured its first gasoline-powered saws with engines as large as 2 horsepower. At this point, chainsaws were still very heavy and expensive compared to today's models which are much lighter and more affordable than ever before.
