3 things to know before selecting a health insurance plan
3 things to know before selecting a health insurance plan, Choosing a health plan can be complicated. Knowing a few things before you compare Marketplace plans can make it easier.
- The 4 “metal levels”: There are 4 categories of Marketplace insurance plans: Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum. The plans in these categories are differentiated based on how you and your plan share the costs of your care. The categories have nothing to do with the amount or quality of care you receive.
- Your total health care costs: You pay a bill to your insurance company for your plan each month (a “premium”), whether or not you use medical services. You pay out-of-pocket costs, including a deductible, when you receive health care. It’s important to consider both costs when shopping for a plan.
- Types of plans and networks — HMO, PPO, POS, and EPO: Some types of plans allow you to use any doctor or health care facility. Others limit your options or charge you more if you use providers outside of their network.
Remember that the quality of the plans may be different. Learn more about quality ratings.
